Road Safety Campaign Group Brake released new figures regarding the number of people with points on their licenses because of using their mobile phones while driving. Being distracted, many of the motorists are putting their lives, along with their potential victims, in jeopardy.

Brake’s figures showed that 575,000 drivers in the United Kingdom use their mobile phone while driving and have earned them points on their licenses for traffic violations. Around 6.5% of the numbers have more than five points on their license for using mobile phones.

The Association of Chief Police Officers heavily supports brake’s campaign. Brake is calling on all motorists to turn off their cellular phones or put them on silent mode while on duty. They are also calling on people to avoid calling or texting people who are on the road to avoid traffic accidents.

Aside from using cellular phones, eating, drinking and smoking also increase the likelihood of a vehicle getting into an accident.

Brake representatives said that even if modern technology does help drivers multitask effectively with intuitive design and functionality, research indicates that majority of drivers cannot divide their time effectively while on the road. Using mobile phones and being distracted while on the road is a recipe for complete disaster.
